Press Release
David A. Schutt, Lake County District Attorney
Lakeview, Oregon

On September 18th a call was placed to local emergency services personnel.  It was reported that a counselor at the Obsidian Trails Camp had restrained a child attending the camp.  While the child was being restrained, it was discovered that the child had stopped breathing.  Camp staff members called 911 to get assistance in performing CPR.  Air Life was dispatched and picked up the child.

Sheriff's Deputies and Oregon State Police Officers began responding to the camp after the initial call.  The child was later pronounced dead at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, Oregon.  Once word was received that the child had not survived the Lake County Major Crime Team was activated by Lake County District Attorney, David Schutt.  Once at the scene an investigation was begun.  Based on statements and physical evidence Charles Matthew Sharp of Bend, Oregon (10/28/77), was arrested for criminally negligent homicide and lodged in the Lake County Jail.  All agencies involved in the major crime team will be continuing a cooperative investigation into this tragic incident.  The results of this investigation will be presented to the Lake County Grand Jury in October.
