Job Description
The Odyssey Field Instructor leads 14-day wilderness therapy expeditions in both program course areas: Coastal Hiking in the Olympic National Park and Longboat Sailing in the San Juan Islands of Washington. The main role of the Field Instructor is to create a safe course environment both physically and emotionally and support each student's unique process in the Odyssey program. Field Instructors are dynamic educators, utilizing the structure of each course phase while applying their own strengths and knowledge to the course curriculum. The Field Instructor works together with their Co-Instructor in the field and communicates with their Field Therapist, the Field Manager and Logistics staff by satellite phone. This is known as the Treatment Team, and as a team you will plan, initiate and maintain course norms, boundaries, and therapeutic treatment objectives. While leading and teaching hard skills such as backpacking and sailing, Field Instructors also model and mentor soft skills such as leadership, communication, working together, and support. The Field Instructor job at Odyssey is very challenging, highly rewarding, and provides the opportunity for individual growth, learning, and valuable experience. At Odyssey, Field Instructors will find a supportive, empowering work culture that promotes community and values each individual's strengths and abilities.
