A Coordinating Therapist works with a vibrant team of wilderness therapists and guides and other referring professionals in directing mental health and substance abuse therapy to the adolescent clients while acting as a catalyst for family change.
The Coordinating Therapist leads small groups of families through the treatment process. They complete psychosocial evaluations and assist with intake, brief the treatment team, develop individual therapeutic strategies for clients and conduct a multi-family assessment meeting. While the clients are on the wilderness expeditions the Coordinating Therapist directs the clinical team by phone. They update families as well as coach the families to initiate family change and develop aftercare plans, working closely with the educational consultants and other referral sources. At the conclusion of treatment, the Coordinating Therapist spends a night outdoors with the clients and helps them to process their experience. They then lead a multi-family therapy group before discharge. Coordinating Therapists also provide training and individual supervision to the clinical staff as well as assist with program development and other administrative duties. The job involves some weekend and on-call work.
An ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge and experience in both mental health and substance abuse counseling, especially with adolescents and families, and working experience in therapeutic programs. Also helpful is experience in wilderness therapy or outdoor education. Strengths needed for the job include clinical sophistication, leadership, compassion, flexibility, creativity and excellent communication skills, MSW, master's degree in counseling, PhD or comparable substance abuse certification is required along with substantial post-graduate experience.

Job description:
Catherine Freer Wilderness Therapy Program (CFWTP) is an innovative adolescent treatment program. We offer a licensed, clinically focused dual-diagnosis program based on three week backpacking expeditions. Our program operates year-round in a variety of beautiful wilderness area settings throughout the Northwest. Clients typically have behavioral and substance abuse problems, however they are usually not delinquent. CFWTP is looking for full-time and seasonal staff who are responsible, self-motivated and comfortable working with adolescents in a wilderness setting. Locations vary by season and may include snow camps, raft trips, desert and mountain wilderness.
Lead Therapist Responsibility/Qualifications:
The wilderness therapist provides leadership on mental health and addiction treatment issues for a group of 6 to 8 adolescents on three-week therapeutic backpacking expeditions, accompanied by two other staff members.
Responsibilities include; individual treatment planning, daily group and individual counseling with clients, client assessment and placement recommendations; discharge planning. Our therapists also provide clinical supervision and training of other field staff, both less experienced therapists and the wilderness guides.
Required:
Graduate degree in social work, therapy, counseling, addictions, a related mental health field and/or Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor (Meets Oregon standards as a Qualified Mental Health Professional.); working knowledge of chemical dependency issues, individual and group psychotherapy and family systems theory as well as skills in assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning; a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with youth, families, referral sources, and co-workers; a current drivers license and acceptable driving record.
Prefer:
Outdoor experience in expedition environment; adolescent treatment experience; must be willing and able to learn to live on three-week expedition trips in remote settings; capable of hiking 12-20 miles over varied terrain in all weather conditions with a 40-65lb. backpack.
