The wilderness
instructor is a position that requires innate capabilities that
cannot be taught, but can be cultivated and enhanced. We
at Alldredge believe that each individual has a personal life mission
and that mission can be pursued and fulfilled on a path of virtue. At
Alldredge Academy, our mission is to empower youth and families
to rediscover their life missions and to increase their desire
and capacity for virtue.
Wilderness Instructors are the people who facilitate
the initial immersion into our program, and instructors serve as
models, stewards, and teachers for the children who come to us. We
are in search of people who are motivated, open minded, and whose
personal mission is congruent with that of serving children and
their families. We believe that through modeling and cultivation
of meaningful relationships based on virtue, coupled with our therapeutic
model, we can make a profound and lasting impact on youth. Wilderness
Instructors are a key element of this therapeutic process and are
key members of a therapeutic treatment team. An instructor
does not merely teach outdoor survival and search and rescue skills,
but they inevitable form deep and meaningful relationships with
students and set the tone for the student’s journey to fulfillment
of their missions and self-discovery.
Instructors are responsible for student’s
safety, teaching the curriculum, and implementing therapeutic treatment
plans. The typical work schedule is 24/7 in the field, with
roughly two weeks on and two weeks off.
Requirements: High School
diploma required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Prefer
experience working, guiding or leading outdoor groups. Must
possess a current driver’s license and pass a driver’s
license background check. All employees must pass a state

background check.

living skills and the course curriculum.

We are located in the mountains of West Virginia, in Canaan Valley
and border on the Dolly Sods Wilderness Area. The Blackwater
River, a popular destination for fisherman and whitewater kayakers
runs right through our community. Our Wilderness Program
Headquarters is in Davis, the highest incorporated town in West
Virginia, and have two ski resorts within ten minutes from our
office. If you like backcountry skiing, we have plenty of
room for that too.
