St. Paul's Preparatory Academy in Phoenix, Arizona is seeking an Assistant Head of School who can lead the everyday operation of an Academy that provides rigorous academics, spiritual growth, therapeutic support, and character development. The individual should have experience and interest in the emotional, spiritual, and character growth of the students in addition to academic achievement. The applicant must have the ability to organize and manage multiple projects and activities.
St. Paul's is a private, independent Episcopal boy's school with 75 day and boarding students. The students who attend St. Paul's are often young men who have been under-motivated and under-achieving in prior educational settings. The average class size is ten students. This is an excellent position for someone who wants to have an impact on students in a small classroom setting. The candidate for the Assistant Head of School should be a strong leader and a team player with a Master's or Doctoral Degree in Education, Administration, Developmental Psychology, Counseling, or related area. Classroom or related experience and familiar/work with small independent schools or therapeutic programs is required. Starting date summer 2009, (negotiable).
REPORTS: Headmaster
SUPERVISES: Department heads, staff, and all other personnel
JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant Head of School/Program Director is responsible for coordinating all phases of the school in such a way that each department works harmoniously within the program. S/he will be direct supervisor of the department heads.
MAJOR DUTIES:
Support School and Leadership
- Support the school and its leadership, articulate the vision for the school and its future, and support the school’s board-approved mission.
- Be a visible presence in all areas of the school; work toward a resolution of problems – both routine and unique – as they arise; keep the headmaster informed of the general programs, activities, and problems.
- Assist the Headmaster in providing the board of trustees various scenarios and possibilities for the board to consider as it does its work focusing on the strategic future of the school.
Education
- Be responsible for its day-to-day operation: monitoring student academic progress.
- Observe, supervise, and help evaluate the staff in the development and implementation of curriculum; to supervise the teaching process.
- Oversee the grading and the reporting of standards and methods used by staff in measuring student achievement.
Counseling
- Supervise and coordinate the Academy’s departments of counseling and student residential life.
- Act as the counseling leader, responsible for its day-to-day operation of the counseling department.
Administrative Leadership
- Provide an orderly, controlled environment in which learning can take place, a school climate which is supportive and reflects high morale.
- Monitor programs for the orientation of new staff and in-service training of all staff, to ensure the staff is familiar with and adhere to school policies in all areas of the school operation.
- Assist in preparing a master school schedule and assigning staff.
- Assist in the development of the corporation budget and financial management.
- Conduct regular meetings with staff dealing with both routine school matters and stimulating the exchange of ideas on issues of educational philosophy, interests and concerns.
- Coordinate accreditation requirements and ensure compliance with those agencies which accredit the Academy
- Assist in the admission process of applicants for enrollment.
- Oversee the coordination of the co-curricular and extra-curricular activity programs of the school;
- Make recommendations to the Headmaster regarding the hiring, retention, and the assignment of staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Headmaster.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Normal working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. However, the nature of this position requires that the Assistant Head of School/Program Director be available when emergencies and other situations require their presence
QUALIFICATIONS: A Masters Degree or Doctoral Degree in education, psychology or related field plus experience at a supervisory level is required.
