Field Director (Bend, OR)

Description:
New Vision Wilderness is currently seeking applicants for a Wilderness Field Director for our West Coast Program in Bend, Oregon. A Wilderness Field Director will report directly to the Program Director or Executive Director and will be responsible for overseeing everything related to the NVW Field operations.

Wilderness Directors are responsible for ensuring a safe and therapeutic milieu for our groups of 12-17 year old struggling teens and young adult programming. Field Directors are in charge of supervising Wilderness Instructors, planning itineraries and managing schedules, crisis response and prevention, policy development, and direct care of clients. This position requires a residency in Bend OR. In addition there may be training and assessment period in Wisconsin North Woods based on programming needs and census. This position requires flexibility, relocation, sound decision making abilities, and office management skills.

This job will be offered as a full time position, and salary depending on applicant’s experience, willingness to work in the wilderness therapy field, and flexibility with different duties.

Responsibilities:

  • Management of day-to-day programming milieu and maintaining the clinical modality
  • Mentoring and training instructors; including being in the field for supervision and training purposes - a minimum requirement of one overnight in the field with clients weekly
  • Assist Program Director in creating and implementing structured training systems for field instructors
  • Creating and implementing NVW Policies and Procedures and sustain NVW’s philosophies
  • Ability to respond to crisis and enforce emergency protocols – including the ability to work some weekends as necessary
  • Assist with logistics, enrollments, and other office duties as needed
  • Support Adventure Programming (Climbing/ Canoeing/Skiing) 
  • Assist Program Director by providing input and feedback in field instructor performance reviews, applicant interviews, etc.

Skills Required:
The successful candidate will possess the following skills:

  • Motivated, energetic, and detailed/organized, and a quick learner.
  • Confident with vendor relationships and has demonstrated successes with internal and external customer service.
  • Able to develop and manage budgets to promote program safety and efficiency.
  • Possess strong communication skills.
  • Have demonstrated leadership and problem solving abilities.
  • Have backpacking experience.

Requirements:

  • Education: BS/BA degree required (related field preferred)
  • Age: 21+ years old
  • Experience: 3-4 years’ experience in wilderness therapy required
  • Skills: Excellent leadership skills, strong communication skills, creative with excellent problem solving skills
  • Certifications: Certified Wilderness First Responder (including CPR)
  • Other Requirements: must own your own backpacking gear, be able to relocate to Bend, OR or surrounding field area; able to lift and carry 50+ pounds for extended durations over uneven terrain; must possess a clean driving record with a valid driver’s license, must be able to pass a background criminal investigation and able to pass a drug screen, if necessary

If offered a position there will be an in-field training phase that involves participation in a week on week off schedule, direct care of clients, and logistical support. The training phase could last up to two months.

Wilderness Therapist

New Vision Wilderness therapy programs combine canoeing, backpacking expeditions, and more with psychotherapy in order to assess and intervene with 13-17 year old struggling teens. While allowing structured wilderness excursions to physically challenge clients, master's level clinicians intensively challenge patients in one-to-one and group therapy sessions. This mixture of wilderness excursions and therapeutic contact helps promote the personal growth of each client.

NVW is currently seeking applicants for Full-Time Wilderness Therapist. Wilderness Therapist is the primary therapist responsible for overseeing clinical care of NVW clients and may work up to 4-days a week or more, including overnights, in the Oregon and Wisconsin wilderness while on backpacking, canoeing, and other outdoor expeditions. This position may work in all NVW programs (Wilderness Immersion, 21-Day Expedition, Family, School, and 1:1.) This is an exciting and unique opportunity to work in alternative therapeutic intervention with a growing agency.

Responsibilities:                                   
Wilderness Therapists are responsible for clinical intake, case management, individual and group therapy, post-trip clinical summaries and all related paperwork. Wilderness Therapists may carry a caseload of up to 5 clients during extended expeditions.

Responsibilities also include direct care and supervision of clients, completion of daily paperwork, and weekly planning of group activities.

Requirements:
Master degree required. State Licensed preferred. 21+ years old. Minimum of one year experience working in the field with at-risk youth, or comparable experience. CPR and First Aid certifications required. Certified Wilderness First Responder preferred. Ability to lift and carry 50+ pounds for extended durations. Excellent leadership skills. Strong communication skills. Creative with excellent problem solving skills.  Must be able to pass a Background Criminal Investigation. Must hold a valid driver's license with clean driving record.

Lead Field Therapist

The Lead Field Therapist is the primary therapist responsible for overseeing clinical care of New Vision Wilderness clients and ensuring follow through of the NVW clinical model. Field therapists will work a flexible schedule based on programming needs; this may include working up to 4 days per week or more in the wilderness including overnights. This position may work in all NVW programs.

Responsibilities:

Lead Field Therapists are responsible for clinical intake, case management, individual and group therapy, post-trip clinical summaries and all related paperwork. Lead Therapists may carry a caseload of up to 6 clients during extended expeditions while providing mentoring and guidance to Field Therapists.

Responsibilities also include direct care and supervision of clients, completion of daily paperwork, and weekly planning of group activities.

Requirements: 

  • Master's degree in counseling-related field required.
  • State licensed -21+ years old.
  • Minimum of two years' experience working in the field with at-risk youth, or comparable experience.
  • Excellent leadership skills, communication, and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50+ pounds for extended durations and have the ability to walk at least 1 mile over uneven terrain
  • Must be able to pass a Background Criminal Investigation. -Must hold a valid driver's license with clean driving record..
  • Must possess a current first aid and CPR certification; Certified Wilderness First Responder preferred.

Wilderness Instructors:

Wilderness Instructors work in the wilderness, guiding groups of up to nine students on backpacking, canoeing, and other outdoor expeditions. Wilderness Instructors often work several days straight in the Wisconsin wilderness. Instructors are in charge of group structure, supervision, safety, curriculum facilitation, teaching wilderness skills, and will be working hand in hand with NVW therapists who treat our children. This position will work in all NVW programs (Adolescent Outdoor, Family, School, and 1:1) and therefore with families and/or young adults too.

Requirements:

  • 21+ years old
  • BS/BA degree in related field.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience working in the adventure or outdoor field with at-risk youth, or comparable experience.
  • Excellent leadership, communication and problem solving skills.
  • Must possess and maintain current First Aid and CPR certification (WFR preferred)
  • Ability to lift and carry 50+ pounds for extended durations
  • Must be able to pass a Background Criminal Investigation.
  • Must hold a valid Driver's License with clean driving record. 
  • Must pass a post-employment offer medical physical
