| From Strugglingteens.com New Perspectives Delta, UT White River Academy is a therapeutic boarding school for troubled adolescent males age 12-17. The school helps students who struggle with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, trauma, social struggles, low self-esteem, adoption & attachment issues, substance abuse, and pornographic addiction. Five years after White River Academy was founded in Puerto Rico by Justin Nielson, in 2007 the program moved to Delta, UT. Justin Nielson helped develop White River Academy's vision, goals, standards, and policies and procedures. He brings over 16 years of professional experience working with at-risk youths, and has worked in targeted case management, as a psychiatric technician, and as an assistant recreational therapist. Kris Cary, Academic Director, has held his position since December 2006. Kris focuses on the academic process, delivery, content, and course application for White River Academy. He received a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership with an emphasis in Alternative Education from Prescott College in June 2009, and has worked with at-risk youth for over 16 years. Cydney Cary, Academic Registrar, has worked at White River Academy since December 2007. Her responsibilities include requesting students' academic records, evaluating these records, creating an Individual Student Plan (ISP), enrolling students, and keeping track of individual and overall academic progress. Using an experiential learning approach that makes students think about what they do, White River Academy offers therapeutic programming, a customized academic curriculum, and community service to foster personal growth. It is small and family-directed, has an accredited educational facility, and provides individualized academic programs.
