A thrilling opportunity has arisen which will help facilitate a deeper connection between our boys and one of earth's winged marvels, the Homing Pigeon.

Through the beneficence of one of our parents, coupled with the unstinting, seemingly boundless generosity of noted Mississippi educator, Ronnie Shumaker, Whetstone recently acquired twenty-two beautiful Homing Pigeons. Ronnie has spent twenty-plus years using racing pigeons as living, hands-on lessons for middle school children, using the birds not only as fascinating cross curricular teaching tools but also as a pathway to a deeper connection between students and the birds, as well as between student, teacher and curriculum.

We converted the top story of our chicken barn into a pigeon loft, and are now sequestering the birds for two weeks in order to acclimatize the "homers" to their new point of reference. Soon we will begin to let the birds fly around the campus, then progressing to release points farther and farther away.

Stay tuned for updates on the Whetstone Homers and the Boys Who Love Them!

Whetstone Academy is a year round therapeutic boarding school for young boys ages 10 - 14. WA is full therapeutic program in a Montessori environment encouraging young men to discover their innate worth and nurture those gifts to fruition.
