Lon Woodbury's guest, Annette Poizner, is a clinical social worker, therapist and a Master graphologist. "When looking at handwriting samples of clients, it is like looking at a personality thumbnail sketch. As a therapist, it accelerates the 'get to know you' stage and is really a good clinical tool. It helps the client understand who they are and where they are in the growth process." Handwriting is a form of body language, or as Lon put it "handwriting is frozen motion." When used along with other projective and therapeutic techniques, it helps the therapist determine a true diagnosis, giving the therapist insight and therefore the client gains insight. Poizner was concerned that schools have been discontinuing the teaching of handwriting in schools. This is because handwriting uses both the left and right sides of the brain and requires the student to learn how to coordinate several areas of the brain in order to achieve this one specific sophisticated action of handwriting. Areas involved include areas of the brain involved in visual, fine motor control, abstract thinking, memory and even auditory since the sound of words in the student's mind plays a part in writing. Handwriting is one of the best ways to help children learn how to coordinate, control and develop their brain. "Handwriting is not only necessary for that reason, but our talents, strengths and weaknesses are all embedded in our words and doodles, providing a trained clinician a window into a person's character", Annette shared. She went on to share with Lon and the listening audience several examples of her work with clients by diagnosis at least in part through their handwriting.
