Bonners Ferry, ID What It Takes To Be A FounderDoug Kim-Brown, Founder of Echo Springs, and John Winton, Founder of Breakwater Expedition and new Owner of Echo Springs, joined us on The Woodbury Report on K4HD.com. On Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at 12:00pm Pacific Time Contact: Lon Woodbury, MA, CEP, IECA Host 208-267-5550 lonwoodbury@gmail.com www.strugglingteens.com June 17, 2014 Two guests joined us on The Woodbury Report today, both of whom have excelled as entrepreneurs, Doug Kim-Brown and John Winton. They have kept their eye on the vision and original intentions of that vision, focused on the needs of their clients and have developed a team of highly trained and qualified staff. In 1993, Doug founded Echo Springs Center, a young adult program with transitional independent living, where emerging adults work on their issues and learn to succeed in life. John, co-founder of Breakwater Expeditions and the new owner of Echo Springs, holds a BS in Therapeutic Recreation from Radford University, and has been guiding young people since 1996 throughout the USA. He launched Breakwater Expeditions in 2011 and recently became the new Director and co-owner, along with Chris Ankeny, of Echo Springs Study Center. Both Doug and John talked with Lon Woodbury about their inventive programs and the good ingredients that go into making a solid, safe and successful program. Both agreed that emotional and physical safety is a must, a commonality of agreements, and a developed team with the same vision that embodies a combination of form and function. "You must be willing and honest to recognize what you are not good at and therefore, find the right people who can fill that void and work well with others," explained John. "It is important to concentrate on the vision, yet be able to be flexible," Doug added, "and have the perseverance and drive, as John stated, to get you through hard times and struggles. And, you have to keep in mind that the overall outcomes outweigh the risk. The kids/ young adults need to have great experiences. That is what creates a community." The question of whether there will be a merger of the two programs came up and both Doug and John agreed that this was not a collaboration or merger of the two: Echo Springs excels in working with young adults and Breakwater Expeditions excels in working with groups. "I feel like I've been handed a gift," shared John when talking about his new responsibilities at Echo Spring. "I am happy and anxious to get started. Echo Springs is a platform and canvas for me to be a part of." As for Doug's opinion of the changes at Echo Springs, he commented, "I will be supporting John and his team in taking on Echo Springs, which has been a place I have loved to come to work each day for the past 21 years."
