The Refuge - A Healing Place is a long-term, 12-step based program that treats each person as a unique individual. It offers a variety of treatment approaches and methods designed to heal the whole person. Treating trauma and addiction in an integrated approach, The Refuge addresses all aspects of recovery. Traumatic events may include sexual abuse, physical abuse, abandonment, neglect, divorce, and separation from siblings, frequent changes in living situations, which often results in isolation. These stressors may change how people feel about themselves and can lead to addiction and other self-destructive behaviors.

Deana Goldstein, BSN, is the Chief Executive Officer. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Nursing from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She went on to specialize in psychiatric nursing with post graduate work at the University of Michigan's Medical Center, the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto, California, and Georgetown University. She has more than 40 years of experience in the behavioral health field. Rick Fungaroli, RN, BSN, is the Chief Operating Officer. His career and experience in the medical field includes working in critical care, emergency nursing and trauma for 14 years, and director in critical care services. Denise Cannon, RN, is the Director of Nursing. She has an extensive background in physical, behavioral health and addiction medicine. She works directly with the medical staff, inter-disciplinary treatment team and clients. She assists with the psycho-education, therapeutic interventions and detoxification services.

The Refuge uses a variety of different therapies to help clients work through trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance abuse, process addictions, and self-defeating behaviors. The approaches to treatment at The Refuge include: yoga, meditation, mindfulness, breathwork, hypnotherapy, psychodrama, equine therapy, and Somatic Experiencing.
