"Let the games begin!" The Utah Summer Games, that is! Sunrise resident Laura is now a four time medalist. Laura ran the Cross Country 3-mile race and came home with the bronze medal. She also ran four track events and medaled in three. In the only event that Laura did not claim a medal, the 100 Meter Dash, she placed fourth. She took the Silver medal in both the 200 Meter Dash (:30.96) and the 400 Meter Hurdles (1:21.10). Laura brought home the Gold Medal in the 100 Meter Hurdles (:17.84).
Laura trained for the summer games by running 4 to 5 times per week at the local high school track as part of Sunrise's Fitness Program. Joel Beckstrand, our Academic Director, who also oversees the Physical Education and Fitness Program, not only trained with the students, he also brought home the Gold Medal in Men's Cross Country. Joel is dedicated to helping our students reach not only their academic goals, but their personal goals as well. He characterizes Laura as a determined young lady who continues to show a strong commitment to track. Her success that the Utah Summer Games is a tribute to her work ethic and strong resolve to accomplish her goals.
Just ask Laura what it was like, and she will proudly share the story. "The Summer Games was an awesome experience for me. It felt really good to be able to get out there and compete." During the first day of competition, Joel and Laura ran the 3-mile Cross Country. Laura admits that she trailed Joel in this long race; distance running is not her strongest area. She decided to give it a shot, since she had been training for the past three months at our local track. She gave it her best, and crossed the finish line! The second day's events included the track events, which is what she excels at. Laura's favorite event has always been the 100 Meter Hurdles, in which she took the Gold Medal. Laura says that participating in the games was an amazing experience, and that it keeps her motivated to stay on the right track and try her hardest.
We are proud of our relationship with Laura, and the opportunities we are able to provide our students to really shine and show what they are capable of. We are delighted to share in Laura's excitement of what she has accomplished not only at Sunrise, but also at the Utah Summer Games!
