Studies show that there are three primary factors that increase the likelihood of positive long-term success following discharge from residential treatment: parental Involvement in the treatment process, the stability and structure of the discharge environment, and the utilization of aftercare support after discharge. In an effort to help support our families through the transition process and increase our girls' success, we are pleased to announce that Solstice RTC has implemented a detailed aftercare program.

This research-based aftercare support is based upon education, community and innovation. Families are educated about the important role of good aftercare in greater long-term success following treatment. They will participate in a variety of learning experiences relative to aftercare/transition throughout the treatment process to increase understanding and preparation for this vital time. They also are directed and supported in the process of building a community of support systems both within the Solstice system as well as within their family and home system. They will be encouraged to seek the direction, expertise and counsel from their Solstice therapist, educational consultant, and/or referring professional as they begin to implement aftercare principles and programs. As families invest in the process of treatment and aftercare preparation, they will develop and utilize new skills and processes, new ways of thinking, acting and collaborating, which require creativity and openness to new ideas.

Preparation for aftercare will begin immediately upon admission to Solstice. In addition to receiving books and materials, families will be encouraged to attend Solstice Family Seminars where further education will occur in face-to-face groups. Other tools include webinars, parent seminars, parent assignments, and individual coaching.

One of the most distinctive elements of this new aftercare support is a personalized home visit. Kelly Olson, MSW, is our dedicated transition specialist and an expert in aftercare and in-home support. Shortly after discharge, Kelly can travel to the family's home to conduct a home visit, providing specialized consultation and support services, coaching, education and development of natural mentors and support systems for the child in the home community.

Our success can be measured by our families' success. Evidence shows that quality aftercare support greatly enhances long-term success. For this reason, we are pleased to offer the new Solstice aftercare program as part of the RTC process, fully integrated into our program.
