October 13, 2009

Fall is here and we're gearing up for the annual "Shelterwood Thanksgiving Serve" project. The students always enjoy connecting with the community and are excited to take a break from school. We'll shut down the Shelterwood campus for a week and reach out to the community through delivering Thanksgiving food baskets to needy families, helping rake yards for widows and the elderly and help build a Habitat home.

We will also be loading up the vans and trailers and heading back down to the Gulf Coast region to assist the people in need. You might remember that President Bush said, "It will take 25 years for the Gulf region to recover from Katrina." This is year number five and the people are still in need. We will be helping to rebuild Charles Cassar's home which was damaged from the hurricane flooding. Michelle Beadle, our hostess, reports, "The church in Chalmette has a backlog of people requesting help rebuilding their homes due to Katrina." We're determined to help the people finish the job and it offers us a great mission trip opportunity. We're excited to represent the love of Christ through our hands as we get dirty and serve.

So, remember us during the week of November 9, 2009 as we take a crew of Shelterwood kids, Staff and Leadership down to Kiln, Mississippi and New Orleans to clear debris, rebuild homes and offer encouragement to the people.
