Santiam Crossing School is partnering with Wilderness Medical Associates to certify all students as Wilderness First Responders.

As part of the therapeutic boarding schools' professional development certification program, students will become certified to assist in a medical emergency when help is miles away and calling 911 isn't an option. All students who successfully complete the course will receive a Wilderness First Responder, Anaphylaxis, and Healthcare Provider level CPR certification. Students will also earn one-half of an elective credit by participating in this course "These certifications are a great way for our students to connect with professionals and professions that may inspire their future career choices. In addition, they learn stress-management, how to stay calm in crisis situations, leadership and self-management skills plus gain self-esteem. Another bonus is that they can add these certifications to their college applications and job resumes," explained Ryan Sturch, Santiam Crossing School program director.

The training will be held September 24 through October 2nd. Students complete practical skills, case studies and scenarios designed to challenge their decision-making abilities. Topics covered include: wound management and infection, realigning fractures and dislocations, improvised splinting techniques, patient monitoring and long term management problems, and up-to-date information on all environmental emergencies.

Students will demonstrate what they've learned at the upcoming Parent Weekend; when parents visit campus for two-days and take part in structured family-time, family therapy sessions, and work toward healing family dynamics.

Santiam Crossing School is located on the West Coast in Oregon, Santiam Crossing is a therapeutic boarding school for adolescents ages 14 to 18. Students benefit from extensive therapy, a family reunification program, academic credit recovery, an academic-based wilderness adventure program, and an adventure-focused professional development certification program. Santiam Crossing is a great option for adolescents who are struggling with behavioral issues; poor academic achievement; and mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, ADD/ADHD, attachment issues, and trauma. The majority of our students are using drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism. The average length-of-stay is eight to nine months. Attendance of a therapeutic wilderness program is a pre-requisite for enrollment.

Santiam Crossing's academic program is accredited by the Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC). The therapeutic boarding school is licensed by the State of Oregon and is a registered private school. Learn more about Santiam Crossing at www.santiamcrossing.com or call (503) 394-4294.
