Former Astronaut John Phillips, Ph.D., visited the Northwest Academy campus and presented to an assembly of students and faculty.

"A civilization that only looks inward will stagnate," he shared with Northwest Academy students. "We have to keep looking outward; we have to keep finding new avenues for human endeavor and human expression."

Northwest Academy students were enthralled during the presentation and honored that a former astronaut took the time to speak with them. The students offered up many questions that the former astronaut happily answered.

Phillips has logged more than 203 days in space, performed a spacewalk, worked at the International Space Station, and has flown on three different spacecraft types: shuttle, Soyuz and International Space Station. He graduated second in his class at the Naval Academy, was awarded the NASA Space Flight Medal, NASA Distinguished Service Medal, the Gagarin Medal, the Russian Medal of Merit for Space Exploration, the Los Alamos National Laboratory Distinguished Performance Award and various military awards.

About Northwest Academy
Northwest Academy is a therapeutic boarding school specifically designed to meet the unique needs of high school juniors and seniors. Our carefully designed structure and curriculum enables students, at-risk of not graduating high school due to mental health, behavioral or substance abuse issues, to address the roadblocks that are keeping them from successfully transitioning to adulthood.

Northwest Academy students repair their grade point average, rekindle their desire to attend college, apply and are accepted into college, and examine their thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and the relationships and patterns between them. Students leave Northwest Academy with a high school diploma in hand and the tools, motivation and confidence needed to lead a successful life. Located on a beautiful plateau in the mountains of northern Idaho, students are accepted for enrollment year-round.
