We have established a new scholarship fund in honor of Dan D. Winther, a long time and much loved resident of Next Step Recovery who recently passed. The scholarship will be offered at the Executive Director's discretion, to benefit those in need of support at attaining long-term recovery from addiction. The grant will cover the program admission fee of $4,000.

Dan Danstead Winther was one of our everyday heroes - having lived an incredible life. As a NASA engineer, he was a crucial team member when the shuttle program began in the 1980s. As we all know, initial drug use often begins with naïve intentions. Dan was under significant pressure to work late and stay focused - his introduction to stimulants lead to a tragic downfall that ended his career, but fortunately for us left intact his big heart, despite the painful effects of long-term addiction. Dan was known for his over-the-top generosity, his care for his fellow residents, and taking a deep interest in their lives. He knew just how to extract a laugh when it was needed most. Better still, the insight he shared regarding the struggle of addiction and the promise of recovery inspired our community - especially the younger members who saw him as a father (or grandfather) figure. As we affirmed at his celebration of life, we have much 'Danning' to do, in his honor.

This scholarship fund is just one example of 'Danning' - giving freely, in the hope that what we do transforms the lives of those around us. We know Dan would be happy and honored that this is just one of the ways we are uplifting his legacy. Your gift will honor the smile that says "yes" to recovery, and to every newcomer "you're welcome here."

Please consider supporting our Scholarship fund, in honor or in celebration of a loved one... so we can continue to offer this valuable resource to more men in need. Click here to donate.
