Newport Academy is proud to announce that its' Chair of Addiction Medicine, David Smith, MD, was recently honored by the California Medical Association (CMA) with its prestigious Sparks Leadership Achievement Award. This award "honors an individual or group that has shown outstanding concern for the health of communities."

Dr. Smith founded the Haight-Ashbury Free Clinics in 1967 to care for the masses of young people arriving during the Summer of Love in San Francisco. The clinics saw over 2 million patient visits under his leadership. He is a pioneer in the treatment of substance abuse, has been the President of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and is a well-respected author and lecturer on the treatment of substance abuse and addiction. Additionally, Dr. Smith was awarded the 2010 ASAM Annual Award "for outstanding contributions to the growth and vitality of our Society, for thoughtful leadership in the field, and for deep understanding of the art and science of Addiction Medicine." Dr. Smith is also a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (FASAM), a Fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology FAACT), and a Diplomat of the American Board of Addiction Medicine.

Dr. Smith will be presenting at this year's national NATSAP conference in Tucson, Arizona. Please plan to attend his lecture "Effective Strategies in the Treatment of Adolescent Substance Abuse and Co-occurring Disorders" on Friday, January 21 from 2:00pm to 3:30pm at NATSAP.
