AUTISTIC BOY SUFFOCATES DURING PUNISHMENT
(June 20, 2008) The National Post, a Canadian news source reports a nine-year-old boy with Autism, who was attending a special-needs school in Quebec, suffocated under a heavy therapeutic blanket used as a punishment when he became disruptive. He was then left unsupervised in a corner for 20 minutes

SEATTLE'S TEEN PROSTITUTION
(June 26, 2008) The Seattle Post Intelligencer reports a new study:"Who Pays the Price? Assessment of Youth Involvement in Prostitution in Seattle," is Seattle's first attempt in decades to quantify a notoriously elusive population, with findings that hundreds of girls are prostituting with little or no substantive help from authorities.

BRITISH WORRY ABOUT LACK OF SKILLS
(July 8, 2008) Findings of a survey conducted by The Association of Graduate Recruits show top employers in Britain are concerned about recent graduates' lack of poor reading and writing skills, as well as communication and problem solving abilities, leaving the graduates lacking skills to join the work force.

POSITIVE VIEW OF ORPHANAGES
(July 6, 2008) The Ohio Masonic Home, an orphanage in Springfield, OH, holds a bi-annual reunion for children who grew up at the home from 1897-1956 who claim, "we never called it an orphanage, it was our home…" and they love coming back every Fourth of July weekend.

PRISON DISCIPLINE MODEL FAILS FOR CHILDREN
(July 6, 2008) A Providence Journal columnist states prison discipline is no model for youths (or adults), that "punishment doesn't change their life situation. If anything, it concentrates their badness. We're just telling them, 'You've got to be better.'"

INDICTMENTS IN YOUTH DEATH
(July 15, 2008) A Grand Junction news source reported indictments have been issued in the case of a 15-year-old boy who died while taking part in the wilderness-based program, Alternative Youth Adventures. AYA, which is owned and operated by New Jersey-based Community Education Services incorporated, was indicted for criminally negligent homicide and child abuse resulting in death, after the boy was court ordered to attend the program.

FACTORY MODEL LEAVES TROUBLED STUDENTS BEHIND
(July 20, 2008) A Providence Journal columnist believes most American public secondary schools are "organized as factory model schools". Therefore, if a troubled student is uncooperative with the demands of learning on the "educational assembly line", automatic consequences result.
