(In a letter to Lon Woodbury, Barry Blevins, Executive Director of The High Frontier, updates us on the conditions of the school and the surrounding area of Fort Davis, Texas after wildfires ravaged the area on April 9, 2011.)

Lon,

It remained scary up until Tuesday, April 12, as fire threatened our only unburned front. Our valley blazed Tuesday but never came up the hill.

There were nine fire units waiting, so I felt pretty confident we would beat the devil. The previous Saturday, I saw fires coming to the back of three dormitories as well as my house. The fire department protected all of our structures except a small well-house. The students were very cooperative with the evacuation and rose to the occasion in terms of spirit. We wish to send many thanks to those volunteers who were indeed working for High Frontier, but were simply not receiving a pay check. My niece, sister in law, the congregation of Hill Side Baptist Church, and Liz McGhee were all gurus of altruism. I remained rationale and non-emotional until I witnessed a van returning the first group back to High Frontier on Wed. night.

While evacuated, therapeutic and academic practices continued for our students at our evacuation location and recreation was high as well.

We received a lot of kind words and welcomed thoughts from consultants and parents and we wish to thank all who had us in their thoughts and prayers.

(This is an added thought and prayer to those currently at High Frontier from an alumnus of the program)

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you. 20 years ago I resided at High Frontier and it is an excellent program for troubled youth, believe me I used to be one of the biggest handfuls. I want to thank the staff mostly Tom, Barry and Dr. Dangle for their hard work. Thank you so much and I hope that everything gets up and moving again.

Yours truly,
Kristina (Wright) Henry
