In early July, 2009, Directors and owners of Chrysalis, ten students and one parent spent almost three weeks in Tanzania on a trip originally planned as an opportunity for cultural immersion, adventure and service projects, but all came away from this trip in what every participant describes as a "life changing" experience.
Our service project took us to Kaloleni Primary School, which is on the distant perimeter of Moshi and our tasks included the construction of a six foot fence to enclose and secure the school; refurbishing three classrooms with fresh paint and cement work; rehabilitation of a former structure into an apartment for two teachers and their families; planting bougainvillea along the new fence line and purchasing and installation of a new soccer goal. Chrysalis and Kaloleni faculty, students, parents, school board and ward officials worked side by side, with all of us communicating with relative ease and shared smiles and laughter. The work lasted five days and ended with all of us believing the people of Kaloleni and the surrounding communities are impoverished in terms of their economy and material possessions, but are wealthy and generous in their collective spirit.
The remainder of the trip included a two day safari in and around the Ngorangora crater and then launched into a seven day ascent and descent of 19,340' Kilimanjaro,
Coming back from this life changing experience, we all realized how truly blessed we are and that giving back feels wonderful.
We are looking to raise money to make some important improvements for the children at Kaloleni School:
To buy/build a small raised platform with water storage tanks and all necessary plumbing supplies required to provide a consistent supply of clean, fresh water.
Kitchen facility improvements that include a sink, a locking cabinet, add a door and secure the little structure.
Purchase textbooks (currently five students share one textbook)
Raising money that is much needed for the children to have a hot meat at school, uniforms (leather shoes, socks, 2 pair of shorts or skirts and 2 shirts) pencils and writing paper
If you would like to sponsor a child, fully or partially please let us know. If you can adopt or fund a particular project, please let us know.
Contact Carolyn in our business office, as she will be our point person as we begin to raise the money and direct it to Kaloleni. She can be reached at 406-889-5577 or by email at: cj@chrysalisschool.net.
