Cherry Gulch is excited to announce that Bernie Zimmerman MA, NCC, LCPC has accepted a position as a Program Therapist. Bernie has worked with adolescents in residential treatment centers since 1998. He spent two years working as the Program Director/Clinical Supervisor of a 70-bed residential treatment center for adolescents. For the last four years Bernie has been an Educational Consultant for Greenwood Associates in Florida. Bernie has high regard for Greenwood Associates and will continue working part-time as a Family & Program Consultant. Bernie said he missed Idaho and moved his family back to the Boise area six months ago. Strenuous travel schedules are a part of the life of an educational consultant and Bernie had a strong desire to spend more time with his wife and three sons. Bernie has been enjoying coaching his sons football team and managing a small caseload here at Cherry Gulch. In college, Bernie was a member of the Boise State University football team.

Andy Gold, Ph.D., was recently promoted to Clinical Director of Cherry Gulch. He has been a therapist at Cherry Gulch for nearly a year now and has done a fantastic job and is an important part of our team. He earned his doctorate degree in Educational Psychology and Counseling Psychology from Northern Arizona University. Dr. Gold has worked with adolescents and their families for the past two decades in a variety of counseling and treatment settings. He served as Program Supervisor for a 20-bed, JCAHO accredited, Adolescent Residential Treatment Center in southern Arizona specializing in anger management with adolescent males. He served as Administrative Director and Clinical Director for a 10-bed, locked, Co-Ed, JCAHO accredited, Adolescent Residential Treatment Center in northern Arizona specializing in substance abuse and mental health treatment with dually diagnosed boys and girls. Dr. Gold has written extensively over the past decade on the subject of anger management. His presentations, workshops, and academic papers have been well received at regional and national conferences in the United States and at international conferences in Ireland and Canada. Dr. Gold is a member of the International Council of Psychologists and the International Association of Applied Psychology. He holds his National Counselor Certification with the National Board for Certified Counselors and is a member of the American Psychological Association. Dr. Gold has realized the practice value of blending therapeutic interventions with experiential education and has applied these realizations in the development of therapeutic horsemanship programs modeled after the initial work of the Equine Facilitated Mental Health Association and later the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association.

Andrew D. Sapp, Ph.D., will remain the President & CEO of Cherry Gulch. Dr. Sapp founded Cherry Gulch in 2004 and has been wearing a number of different hats. The promotion of Dr. Gold to Clinical Director will allow Dr. Sapp more time to focus on training, supervision, program development and modifications, and to continue to guide the vision and direction of Cherry Gulch. Dr. Sapp is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and a well-rounded clinician who has worked as a therapist at a therapeutic wilderness program for 11 to 13 year-old students, a locked inpatient psychiatric hospital where he was the lead clinician on the adolescent unit and also worked on the pediatric unit. He has also worked as a therapist at two community clinics, an elementary school, and an inner city group home for foster boys. He was also a Naval Lieutenant and therapist at a military hospital. Dr. Sapp started his career as a coach, camp counselor, and mentor and later worked at a youth correctional facility with youth as young as 12 years-old. It was here that he developed his passion for working with youth and particularly for early intervention and prevention.

Chris McRoberts, Ph.D., Vice President & Consultant, is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who founded Psychological Testing Services Inc. Dr. McRoberts received Bachelor's degrees in psychology and sociology and his doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Brigham Young University. Since starting Psychological Testing Services, Dr. McRoberts has become a recognized expert and supervisor in the field of adolescent testing and evaluation. Chris and his staff work with students in wilderness programs, public and boarding schools, hospitals, and outpatient and residential centers.

Ryan Hale, LMSW, Licensed Therapist, has worked at a number of mental health facilities including a boys home where he worked for seven years as a rehabilitation therapy technician, case manager, cognitive self change facilitator and victim empathy awareness instructor. He has also worked at two community clinics where he was an individual and family counselor, family mediator, psychosocial rehabilitation worker, a children's day treatment coordinator and he completed an internship in adoption and clinical services. He has also worked for Health and Welfare and Family Services, and as a contract therapist for a boy's residential treatment center.
Si Steinberg, MD., Consulting Psychiatrist attended University of Michigan for his B.S. in Anthropology-Zoology before continuing on to the U. of Mich. Medical School. Some of his training, including his Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship were at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire and UCLA Neuropsych Hospital. Serving as Medical Director and treating psychiatrist for numerous community mental health clinics, he regularly conducts trainings for physicians, other mental health professionals in the areas of diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders with particular emphasis on differential diagnosis, child trauma and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, and medication management.

Gage Young, M.Ed., remains our Program Director, she earned a BA in History from the University of Texas at Austin and her M.A. in Education-Curriculum and Instruction through New Mexico State University. Academically, Gage worked with youth as a teacher in both public alternative schools and a therapeutic boarding school before serving as the Academic Director for a therapeutic wilderness program in Oregon. Most recently Gage developed and served as Director for an early learning center in Eagle, Idaho. Her fabric of life's experiences support her multifaceted approach to the youth of today.

We also promoted Spencer Young, B.A. from Chef to Program Coordinator. Spencer has done a fantastic job creating a healthy menu and a popular kitchen club that is both fun and educational for students. He is highly experienced as he has worked at a number of other schools and therapeutic programs in the past. Spencer has been a Program Director, Shift Manager, Head Wilderness Instructor, behavior interventionist, detention monitor, and a youth mentor, etc. in the past and has the education and experience to be a fantastic Program Coordinator. Spencer earned a B.A. in International Politics from UC Berkeley in 1996 where he was also the Captain of the Lacrosse team. In 1999, he earned his Wilderness EMT Certification.

James Schreck, M.A., is our Head Teacher. He holds a Masters Degree in History/Social Sciences from Hawthorne University and is a teacher of English as a Second Language. James has extensive experience working in the therapeutic boarding school environment, having implemented a ground floor educational program resulting in the development of a fully accredited high school. James developed curriculum for gifted and at-risk students, organized facilities, supervised faculty, and served as acting administrator/registrar.

Alvin Andrew, M.S., Math & Science Teacher, holds a Master of Science Degree from Brigham Young University. Prior to joining the Cherry Gulch team Mr. Andrew served as Chief Information Officer and Vice President of a software development consulting company. In addition to his senior management with several successful companies he has been a faculty member or adjunct faculty member for Michigan State University, BYU and Southern Utah University. In addition Mr. Andrew has taught Mathematics and Science at the Secondary level. The students and staff at Cherry Gulch have appreciated all the experiential learning opportunities Mr. Andrew provides from FIRST Lego Robotics League, to an international rocketry competition (TARC), to building hot air balloons, to using applied mathematics to help the boys build a shed.
Drew Kishpaugh, B.A., English/Special Needs Teacher, earned his B.A. in English from Boise State University. He is experienced in teaching students with special needs in the middle and high school level, including individual accommodations and curriculum modifications. Additionally, Drew has worked on IEP's and his specialties are in dealing with students who have learning disabilities that may require a student to have extra help in any academic or cognitive realm. A former collegiate athlete, Drew is a firm believer in developing strong, positive relationships with his students in all aspects of education.

We also have a number of other outstanding people who are a part of the Cherry Gulch team we have a Chef, two Shift Managers, 18 Direct Care Staff, and two Office Assistants. We have been fortunate to have such highly trained, experienced, and compassionate staff. We now have as many students as we have ever had, with 23 students of our 25 student maximum capacity.
