Breakwater Expeditions, founded by John Winton and Lars Hall, provides community building short-term adventures for individual families, young adults, adolescents and schools and programs.
What John shared was that first and foremost, Breakwater Expeditions is not just another wilderness program. In fact, it is not really a wilderness program at all. Breakwater Expeditions does occur in the outdoors, however the week-long, multi-family treks focus on reuniting family units and building a sense of community. Typically staff work with families involved with a therapeutic school or program, however there are several individual or non-program family treks available throughout the year as well.
John has honed his skills as an outdoor leader and guide in some of the world's wildest and most awe-inspiring classrooms. For 15 years he has facilitated and guided expeditions and experiences in a variety of settings ranging from the mountains to the sea and has logged more than 1500 days in the field working with adolescents and adults. John received his degree in Outdoor Recreation from Radford University and is a graduate of the National Outdoor Leadership School Semester in Alaska where he completed technical outdoor training, leadership skills development, and studied environmental ethics practices. John enjoys the numerous outdoor activities the Northwest has to offer. He can often be found rock climbing, sea kayaking, windsurfing, playing music, woodworking and skiing the pristine powder of Idaho's backcountry. His guide certifications include Wilderness First Responder, Swift Water Rescue, ACA Sea Kayak and RCABC Canoe Instructors, Professional Ski Instructors, Avalanche Level 1 and American Red Cross Lifeguard.
