Black Mountain Academy is pleased to announce Carla Shorts, MS, LPC as Admissions Director

Carla will be taking over as our new Marketing and Admissions Director beginning January 1st, 2017. Carla has a B.A. in Corporate and Organizational Communication from the College of Charleston and an M.S. in Clinical Counseling from Johns Hopkins University.

Prior to joining the team at Black Mountain Academy, Carla worked as a therapist in a wide variety of clinical settings over the past decade, including inpatient psychiatric hospitals, private practice, and a therapeutic boarding school. For the past five years, Carla has worked as a wilderness therapist where she specialized in boys with learning disabilities, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and other neurodevelopmental concerns.

"I am excited to be joining Black Mountain Academy because I so strongly share the vision that Brandon has for interweaving community relationships, adventure experiences, and the arts. I believe that in a world overrun by video games and unbridled access to technology, our boys need community, connection, and the opportunity to feel a true sense of belonging. On my first tour of Black Mountain, I watched as students went into town after school to enjoy the local library, the pottery studio, and the gym. At each of these places, I met community members in Black Mountain that were so enthusiastic to engage with our students. These folks knew our boys by name and told me endearing stories of their progress. I knew that day that something special was taking place at Black Mountain Academy and I very much wanted to be a part of it."

We strongly believe that Carla's passion and skill for working with students on the Autism Spectrum, combined with her trademark warmth and humor, will help parents feel supported on this journey. We are thrilled to welcome her to our team.
