The Auldern Academy is the proud recipient of a flag that has flown over an air base in Afghanistan. A gift from the 95th Airlift Squadron, the "Flying Badgers," was sent to the Auldern girls in gratitude for their support of our troops via writing letters of encouragement. This flag was flown during the important C-130 Nation Building Missions.

The decision to spend their time writing letters has much to do interconnecting experiences our student have while with us. First, on a daily basis they interact in the Social Studies classroom with a dynamic teacher, Chris Will. As a young man, Mr. Will served our country and enjoys challenging students to think and discuss importance of protecting our freedoms and the price that is paid by the people who choose to serve. At the same time, our girls were listening with reverence as one of their classmates grieved the loss of her father who was serving in Afghanistan at the time of his death. The Social Studies lesson then took on personal meaning and our girls felt compelled to actively show support to the young men who are serving our country. Thus, the idea to write letters as part of our Community Service program was born.

The receipt of the flag was an unexpected result of this letter writing campaign. It arrived in a walnut display case emblazoned with the logos of the US Air Force and the 95th Airlift Squadron. It now graces the Academic Common Room to remind all of us that good learning and counseling go hand, inspiring compassion and caring for others and ourselves.
