Aspen Achievement Academy, a licensed outdoor program for struggling teens ages 13-17, is introducing an innovative approach for connecting with parents: live online parenting classes. The informative classes cover a range of topics that teach parents skills they can apply with their child who is enrolled in the Aspen program. “Our goal is to guide parents through this time of transformation, while their child is enrolled with us, by coaching them on effective family communication styles, as well as educating parents of substance abusing teens about the complexities of addiction and recovery,” said Gil Hallows, executive director of Aspen Achievement Academy. “We also remind parents about our comprehensive services and discuss behavioral contracting as they prepare for their child’s homecoming, serving as resources as they continue on their journey toward reestablishing healthy family relationships.”
Aspen Achievement Academy emphasizes therapy, experiential learning and behavioral change. The program creates a modern “rite of passage” designed to assist adolescents in making the transition to responsible young adulthood. It guides each participant through a series of powerful metaphors that symbolize stages of growth, provide deeper insight toward developing self-reliance, and generate a sense responsibility for self and community. These new courses accentuate the program and are held weekly, lasting approximately 1.5 hours. They are designed to be interactive and to provide real-life examples, as well as solutions, for the struggles facing many parents.
Located in Loa, Utah, Aspen Achievement Academy is one of the few wilderness programs nationwide to be selected a top teen drug treatment program by Drug Strategies, a Washington, D.C.-based research institute.
