With the announcement of a partnership agreement with Spectrum Athletic Clubs, every Sober College student will receive a gym membership to one of the premiere athletic clubs in the greater Los Angeles Area.

Sober College Fitness

"We have all heard of the Freshman 15, the idea that most freshman in college gain an extra 15 pounds in their first year of school. For young adults in early recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, the changes the body goes through are incredible. We have found that early concentration on fitness is essential to long term success," according to Dr. Ken Neimann, head of Sober College Fitness.

"I have been a member of Spectrum for over a year and rest assured it is the best quality gym in the Los Angeles area. Our kids already love it, says Annika Richards, Director of Public Education." Having the reputation for the best full service gym in the Los Angeles Area, Spectrum's partnership is very exciting news for students and staff members.

The Spectrum Experience

Upon admission, Sober College's student body receives LifeZone membership tags, as well as GoZone pedometers that track miles accumulated while working out at Spectrum, or walking anywhere. Life Zone is a private program that enables each student to monitor their health and track their "Go" miles so that they can be redeemed for spa treatments, personal training appointments and workout attire. Says Julie M, "I really want to learn how to use weights, so I am going to try to get enough points for a personal training appointment this month."

Spectrum is a high end spa-like facility offering top of the line free motion and free weight equipment, great sport amenities such as racquetball, swimming, basketball, and over 60 exercise classes a week. Some other luscious amenities include Jacuzzi, steam and sauna, a juice bar, nutrition center and Pilates studio. "Anyone can find something they like to do here at Spectrum, says Matt B, a student now enjoying the facility. I love playing racquetball and swimming. I can do both at Spectrum."

The Assessment

Upon admission into Sober College, Dr. Ken Neimann writes up an individual assessment for each student including injury history, personal training schedules, and nutrition analysis. "I feel the fitness aspect of Sober College's curriculum is of high importance to our student's sobriety. Fitness can be a replacement for drug behaviors and allows our students to feel good about themselves without the use of drugs and alcohol."

Dr. Ken Neimann fitness agenda includes the choice of monthly triathlons, 5k/10k and half marathon races. "Our students have been placing in the top 3 through every race we have been in. They are focused and committed to getting into better shape. I have also noticed a cutback in cigarette smoking. I couldn't be more proud of them."
