We are pleased to announce that CALO (Change Academy Lake of the Ozarks) has officially adopted four purebred Golden Retriever puppies as part of our Transferable Attachment Program. Within the CALO program, we provide world class adolescent residential treatment for issues of attachment, affect regulation and trauma. Transferable Attachment through the care of purebred Golden Retrievers is a cutting edge treatment aspect of our program. When clinically appropriate, our students are matched with an “adopt” a Golden Retriever. The Golden Retriever breed was specifically picked for their friendly, loving, confident and reliable temperament which makes them an unbeatable companion for our students. The students become responsible for training and nurturing of their new family member. All interactions with this animal are supervised and used therapeutically. Currently, the students have been interacting with the puppies for two days and they have already begun to bond with their animal friends. The students’ interactions with the retrievers become a constant source of therapeutic metaphors that may be used to engage the students as well as to invite change within both the student and family. Students gain empathy through this relational process. This understanding and attachment is then transferred to the family relationship. For more information about Transferable Attachment and the CALO Program, please feel free to contact me! I look forward to hearing from you.
