Leelanau is a small coed school for high school students struggling in a traditional academic environment. Their slogan is "five-senses learning on Lake Michigan's shore." The school opened 76 years ago, and they point out that many of their 3,600 alumni are "people who by today's standards would have been labeled as students with language-based learning differences and ADD or AD/HD."

At about 70 students, the school is designed for students who need "a smaller, hands-on learning environment in a pristine, rural setting with more individualized attention and an experiential, multi-sensory curriculum to achieve their potential. All of Leelanau's faculty and staff are specifically trained to meet the needs of students who learn differently. We are a strength-based learning community which, in part, explains why we annually have 100 percent college placement."
