Big Sky Youth Ranch is a three-phase residential program where difficult or high-risk students ages 10-18 develop real life skills in a "safe and healthy environment." The initial phase lasts 3-6 months; the main phase is 12-24 months, and the transition phase that allows students to reenter the family and community.

The initial phase is an assessment period. During the main phase of the program, the students live and work on the ranch where they learn a wide-variety of skills designed to increase self-esteem, communication, family living and work related skills that are essential to their success after graduation. Academics are offered through the BYU Independent Study Program.
In the transition phase, the students "learn the importance of gaining and maintaining a productive and positive role in society through the program's work ethic component." Students may enroll in one of the specialty job training programs including construction, auto shop/mechanical, animal husbandry and horticulture.

Big Sky Youth Ranch believes "parental support and involvement is critical to the success of the students." Admissions are accepted year-round based upon completed admissions forms and director approval.
