In a culture often dominated by consumption, consumerism, and efficiency, we sometimes forget to take time to understand how decisions that we make on a daily basis are affecting the environment and potentially the adult lives of today’s children. Decades worth of scientific data is revealing compelling and irrefutable evidence that we are on the verge of a climate crisis. We at Oliverian School believe that all of us, and especially our teenagers, must begin to understand these data and more importantly how we contribute to this potential crisis each day. This is why the theme of this year’s summer school is “Choosing Our Future Today.” Students in this year’s summer school will explore, study, and discuss issues related to global warming, fossil fuel degradation, renewable energy, green building/construction, and sustainable agriculture. They will graduate knowing ways that they can live more sustainably and minimize their impact on the environment and future generations.
With this theme woven throughout, summer school students will complete coursework in all core academic subjects, including math, science, English, and social studies. In addition, students will participate in on-going electives that may include culinary arts, natural art, photography and environmental stewardship on our 2,000 acre wildlife preserve. Students will also care for and harvest produce from our organic gardens and build a straw bale all-season greenhouse.
Summer school is part of our college preparatory curriculum, allowing students to learn to manage their time within a supportive and structured environment. Though students will engage in a number of outdoor activities and community service work on weekends, they will also have ample free time to get out and enjoy the beautiful summer weather. Tuition for this six-week program is $8,000 and includes room, board, academic instruction, advising, and counseling services as needed.
