Northwest Academy is excited to announce the addition of Guy 'Gil' Gilberts, Ph.D., to the academic staff of Northwest Academy. Dr. Gilbert will be responsible for the Special Education Department at Northwest Academy. He received his B.A. from Eastern Washington University, M.R.E. from Canadian Theological Seminary, M.A. from University of Colorado / Colorado Springs, and his Ph.D. in Special Education from Utah State University. With over 25 years of teaching experience, Dr. Gilberts has taught all grades from 1st to 12th in public and private schools as well as undergraduate and graduate students in several universities.

He has taught in one of the few remaining two-room school houses in Montana (grades 1-4), taught in schools with minority populations in the 90%, taught in urban and rural schools, taught general education and special education. Throughout his educational career, Dr. Gilberts has gravitated toward students who have untapped potential hidden behind behavioral challenges. He has researched and published in the areas of Applied Behavioral Analysis, Reading, and Self-Determination.

"Gil" likes to think of himself as a true 'westerner'; a man who can do whatever it takes when the situation requires. While his life work is centered in education he has also had a variety of experiences that round out his character. He supported himself through his B.A. by first working as an apprentice mortician and later developing youth programs for several different churches. He earned his Series 7 in Colorado where he was a broker. At times he has been a rancher, a pastor, a car salesman, and a German linguist in the U.S. Army. All of these experiences have provided him a foundation to connect with a large variety of people.

Dr. Gilberts believes that education should be enjoyable, while maintaining a distinction between enjoyable and fun. Education may or may not be fun at any particular time but the result should always be enjoyable. This attitude conveys itself to students so that they relax and yet stay focused.
