Distant Drums has just celebrated it's one-year anniversary. During that period of time they have had an opportunity to provide adults with an outdoor therapeutic wilderness experience. Over the past year Distant Drums has further developed their program and has created new programs that include several program options with varying lengths of stay to meet the needs of wider variety of adults.

They now offer 3, 7, and 14-day adventure programs, as well as 30 and 60 day, longer-term programs. "The shorter-term programs have been developed to provide participants with an opportunity to challenge themselves physically and to reflect on their emotions, in an environment that is free from everyday distractions." They "hope that anyone who chooses to be involved in their short-term program will be able to prioritize their lives and renew their sense of direction."

"The 30 and 60 day programs offer a strong emotional growth curriculum and an outdoor adventure that includes wilderness survival skills, therapeutic services, substance abuse curriculum, and life skills education. The longer-term programs are conducted in a group setting with highly skilled field staff leader groups. They will continue to operate as a non-deprivation program in the field, because they have found there is less resistance to participating in the program when participants are provided the essentials needed to live comfortably in a wilderness environment."

“All program participants will hike, camp, and learn important outdoor skills. All participants will have an opportunity to learn leadership skills and learn the two meanings of self-sufficiency.” Their goal is to “help participants realize their own potential and help them in the process of setting long and short term goals.”

“They operate year-round, with a rolling admissions policy. The short-term adventure base programs are open to individuals or groups and can be individually tailored by working directly with the program director. The 30 and 60 day programs are designed to meet the needs of adults who are struggling in their day-to-day lives and are in need of a therapeutic program that will help them find direction, build self-esteem, learn leadership skills, and set long and short term goals.”
