Asheville House, a short-term residential program for adolescents ages 16-19, opened its doors on Monday the 16th in Asheville, North Carolina. The program, designed for a 3-6 month stay, offers its participants a pathway to transition from a therapeutic environment back to a traditional setting. Asheville House is structured and supportive, helping adolescents reintegrate with the community, learning how to live a substance-free life, and better prepare to rejoin their families and friends.

Located in Asheville's historic Montford District, Asheville House features two turn-of-the century Victorian homes along with a 2-story education center adjacent to the residences. The program opened its first residence for male participants and currently has 7 enrollments with a total capacity of 20. Asheville House will begin accepting female participants in late May with a total capacity of 8 girls.

"Asheville House offers families a much-needed option in the marketplace having their child attend a shorter-term program," said Carolyn Bradfield, founder of Asheville House. "Parents who are reluctant to commit to a long-term program, those who have an older adolescent, or those that need transition support following a school placement will find Asheville House safe, comfortable and supportive of those needs."

Asheville House offers a number of services for participants including education continuation, life skills coaching, individual and group therapy, 12-Step support, along with recreational activities. Through a relationship with Educere, a nationally recognized online education provider, residents take accredited virtual classes that can be transferred to any high school or college. Students needing additional support are provided specialized on-site tutoring. Daily recreational and fitness programs take place at YMCA facilities, the Montford Recreation Center, or other local venues. Weekend activities include community service projects, festivals and special events, as well as outdoor excursions such as hiking, river rafting and regional tours.

"A very important component of Asheville House is our therapeutic approach," Bradfield added". "Residents receive individual and group counseling each week. Many attend regular 12-Step group meetings which is important because the Asheville community offers a variety of meetings geared to this age group."

Prospective residents are screened carefully to ensure that their participation in the program is an informed choice and that they meet the criteria for success. Asheville House works with each resident and their families to create an Independent Living Plan that defines the goals for their time in the program.
