Launches Parent-Student Weekend Retreat

Benchmark Young Adult School recently launched a new Parent-Student Weekend Retreat program. The weekend retreat concept was designed by Benchmark's founder, Executive Director and CEO, Jayne Selby-Longnecker. "The idea behind the Parent-Student Weekend Retreat is to create an atmosphere for parents and mid-level students to begin to reconnect," states Jaynie. "The students who will benefit most from the retreats have successfully completed specific curriculum requirements and are now ready to learn to establish new guidelines and ground-rules for a more adult-oriented relationship with their parents."

The rules for the weekend retreat are straightforward: the goal is to provide a quiet, relaxing environment for parents and students to communicate. They spend the weekend in a rustic mountain cabin setting without external interruptions, such as cell phones, TV or email. Parents and students participate in a role reversal for the weekend, thus the student is responsible for all the cooking, cleaning and care of their parents.

Benchmark provides an emotional growth curriculum project for parents and students to complete over the course of the weekend. The assignments are designed to help them heal old wounds and move forward in their relationship. Recent Weekend Retreat alumni parents stated, "For us, it felt like barriers were beginning to fall and our time together let us grow closer."
