For over 11 years, Kiatou Wilderness Therapy Centre has offered a unique blend of wilderness therapy and emotional growth therapy for at-risk teenage boys. The program provides boys, ages 13 to 18, with the opportunity to reflect on their life while enhancing their personal development and participating in an unforgettable adventure.

Due in large part to each boy's willingness and desire to change, the Centre has seen some stunning successes. Another critical aspect to these successes begins with a close analysis of the child's environment that resulted in him being out of control in the first place. We have found that no matter how much effort the teen is willing to put into the process, he is unlikely to thrive in a setting where other key factors are not addressed. Simply working with the teen in isolation before returning him to an environment that does not support the positive changes he made in treatment is dooming him to potential failure.

For this reason, Gilles Latrémouille, founder of the Centre, has worked hard to build the team and resources to offer support for the entire family unit. Gilles is both a Licensed Psychotherapist and a Master Practitioner in Neuro Linguistic Practitioning (NLP).

NLP is the cornerstone of the work being done with the boys at Kiatou because it deals with creating patterns of excellence while identifying and teaching effective ways of thinking and communicating. Kiatou now has five staff members with qualifications in NLP to further strengthen its team and broaden the therapeutic services it offers.

Over the last year, the Centre added a life coach to work with parents while the boys are in the program. As the son works on himself, the family is working to ensure a smooth and supportive transition for the son's return. The parents and siblings are often enlightened by what they learn about themselves and each other as they proceed through the coaching sessions. With the support of the Life Coach, the families work through these issues and make the necessary changes to allow their son the best possible chance for success upon his return home.

In addition to the life-coaching component, Gilles recently began working in conjunction with a training consultant to strengthen the program content and ensure continuity between the work being done by all members of the family and their son. The training consultant also acts as a liaison between Kiatou and the parents from the beginning to the end of their son's stay at the camp.

These adjustments have allowed Kiatou to move to a much more therapeutic model. They are being well received and are paying dividends in terms of successful results.

With a solid team in place, Gilles intends to constantly improve and strengthen the services being provided with communication being a key element in the process as well as sharing resources and concerns, which are invaluable tools for all parties. For this reason, a new Parents and Boys forum is being added to the Kiatou website to facilitate group learning and provide necessary support for the entire family.

2007 is shaping up to be a truly dynamic and successful year and Kiatou is looking forward very much to the challenge of helping these struggling young men and their families turn things around and set off on the path to success and healthy self-esteem.
