Boulder Creek Academy (BCA) is a CEDU program developed on the Emotional Growth curriculum that addresses the emotional, academic and physical needs of the whole child. They accept students ages 13-18, who have difficulty achieving their potential in a regular school setting due to learning differences and/or emotional and behavioral difficulties. Most BCA students range average to above average in intelligence.
BCA operates a fully accredited, year-round school that offers a wide variety of educational opportunities for their students. Residents participate in both indoor and outdoor classrooms to facilitate a “hands-on experience” and college prep type academics. The curriculum includes creative expression through public speaking, listening and writing skills. In addition, BCA works with mild to moderate learning disabilities, including both verbal and non-verbal disabilities. The school provides speech and language as well as individual tutoring. Students also participate in intramural athletics and a comprehensive wilderness curriculum.
All students begin their stay at BCA on the farm, where they take care of animals and learn other various farming tasks. The farm work helps minimize the distractions that typically accompany being new to the school. It also provides the staff with an opportunity to learn more about the students' strengths, interests and needs.
In addition to the academic component of BCA, the school offers a well-structured phase system to monitor and support the emotional growth of each student. The emotional growth curriculum focuses on accountability, extensive group work, workshops, and other approaches to help students develop relationships with peers and adults. A licensed therapist oversees the direction of treatment, serves as the primary parent communicator and facilitates individual, family and group therapy for each student.
