Karl Simer, Expeditions Director
Wilderness Inquiry

Wilderness Inquiry, a non-profit organization, founded in 1978, provides socially integrated outdoor education and adventure programs for people of all ages, backgrounds, abilities, and disabilities. Since 1978, they’ve served over 80,000 people of all abilities on trips throughout the Americas, Europe, and Australia. As part of WI’s cooperative outdoor adventures, people can canoe, sea-kayak, backpack, horsepack and dogsled, often with equipment specially adapted by the WI staff.

The general scope of their work includes: 1) leading people on integrated outdoor adventures and day events, 2) training outdoor recreation services providers on how to make their programs accessible to people of all abilities; 3) coordinating environmental learning experiences; and 4) surveying parks, trails and outdoor park facilities for their accessibility to people with disabilities. They are international leaders in the development and implementation of outdoor adventure programs that are universally designed for all people. They also maintain “a ground- breaking resource” in the form of a clearing-house for accessible outdoor recreation for persons with disabilities, at Accessoutdoors.org.

They identify the long-term changes from their programs include positive changes in attitudes, self-esteem, and understanding, as well as respect for natural resources.
