Founded in 1990, Waterman Academy is a 21 day character building/ocean based boot camp for young men ages 13-19 who have become defiant, distant and uncooperative, argumentative, who show lack of motivation and discipline and have low self worth and lack compassion. With the goal of teaching the cadets leadership, this adventure course is challenging both physically and mentally, with strict rules for accountability and safety. Structure, positive and negative consequences are part of the cadet's daily life.
Captain Scott McClung, Waterman Academy's founder is a Harbor Division Sheriff's Deputy, Fire Department Engineer, professional lifeguard and competitive swimmer. Other crew members and staff consist of EMT's, law enforcement,, firefighters, marine biologists, US Coast Guard Masters and Mates, ocean lifeguards, dive instructors and dive masters and Red Cross, CPR, first aid and waterfront lifeguard instructors, but most of all their role is that of a positive, strong male leader.
With a capacity of 60 participants, the cadets will learn CPR and first aid, shipboard firefighting, seamanship, small boat handling, open water life guarding, land and sea navigation, snorkeling, free diving, kayaking and basic maritime and Rapture duties. The young men are motivated and challenged to learn team work, discipline and accountability while experiencing this "rite of passage" to become honorable young men.
