Today on
Parent Choices for Struggling Teens, Lon Woodbury welcomed back one of his guests, Dr. Kevin Ross Emery, the author of
Famous People with ADHD: Are You One Waiting to Happen. Dr. Kevin's first book,
Managing the Gift: Alternative Approaches for Attention Deficit Disorder, which introduced the idea that ADD/ADHD is an evolutionary process and not a disability. Throughout history there have been some very famous and highly successful people that have fallen under the ADD/ADHD umbrella. Some of the highly popular people include John Lennon, Whoopi Goldberg, Adam Levine, Walt Disney, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, JFK, Winston Churchill, Babe Ruth and Van Gough. They were all highly creative, brilliant and bright innovators, and all had a tendency to think outside of the box. And yet, despite the ADHD tendencies, they all soared to the head of the class or found themselves in the top one percent, so to speak. They all had potential and used that potential to be famous rather than infamous.
The education system in the United States is ranked 17 in the world. "It's a mediocre system at best," stated Dr. Kevin. "We teach our kids to think like robots." Classrooms in the United States are less tolerant, have no space for the class clown, and disallow the creative artists or even those that simply challenge the norm. In other countries and the rest of the world, they are not medicating their kids, they are working with the students and using different learning styles that are instrumental in learning.
Dr. Kevin issued a warning to parents: "Kids are getting diagnosed too early and these young kids are being put on medications which starts a lifetime drug habit. Go back and check the side effects of these ADD/ADHD medications: depression, chronic behaviors, stunted growth, weight loss, lack of appetite, sleeping issues and an overall steady raise to their blood pressure. Add these side effects to the diet most kids are on, the junk food loaded in sodium and sugars causing addictions and obesity, and this is a heart attack in the making!"
Today, ADD/ADHD is the second most diagnosed disorder in our country. In a study by the National Institute of Health (NIH), ADHD has a 20 percent rate of misdiagnosis. That rate has probably doubled since the study! The problem is you can't tell what the side effects are, because they take time to show, not to mention the overall effects of long-term use of these medications. "We've got to stop the madness," Dr. Kevin concluded.
