Professor Paul Bialek, the program lead for the Contemplative Psychotherapy program at Naropa University in Boulder Colorado was the featured guest on today's Parent Choices for Struggling Teens with Lon Woodbury and his co-host, Liz McGhee. Having obtained his own Master's degree in this subject and now applying and integrating the wisdom of the contemplative tradition of Buddhism into the practice of counseling and psychotherapy, Paul explained that the basic ideas of Buddhism is "we become what we put our mental energy into in our lives (meditation). Western psychotherapy usually consists of a rich variety of tradition, be it talk therapy, experiential therapy or even equine therapies, with the main goal of easing the suffering of self."

To complement each other, through mindfulness and meditation, certain insights arise and certain confusions fall away through meditation and as a therapist, say working with an angry teen, looking at them as a unique person and avoiding the message "we have to get rid of your anger." But using the approach of getting to know them and taking the energy of anger and use it. "Teens are often angry for a reason- we can work with them with the anger as a tool. There is no emotion we have to get rid of- it's about the choices we make around it. Anger is a natural human response. Contemplative psychotherapy comes into play, when the client becomes aware of the feeling, what the feeling feels like and to be aware of this."

Meditation is paying attention to the given moment, with an emphasis on a warm or friendliness to your thoughts, a type of taming your wandering thoughts. It is non-judgmental, there is no thought to whether accept or decline the thought, but rather learning to be with the experience, allowing things to come and go. Through meditation the Buddhist believe there is a clarity, openness and warmth to achieve.
