Dr. Robert Melillo, co-founder of the Brain Balance Achievement Centers, located throughout the United States, spoke with Lon Woodbury today on Parent Choices for Struggling Teens, covering a wide range of topics concerning various disorders such as Autism, ADHD, Asperger's and how recent research findings are helping to develop understandings that allow for better treatment.
With the latest statistics rising at an alarming rate showing: 1 in 10 children with ADHD, 1 in 7 with learning disabilities and 1 in 88 boys being diagnosed with Autism, Dr. Melillo firmly believes there is a rise in this epidemic, which means that virtually every five years the numbers will double. "It is not slowing down…it is speeding up."
The driving forces in Autism seem to be environmental factors. By looking at everything, from chemicals, personalities, high blood pressure in the parents to hormonal levels, we were able to identify over forty different preventable risk factors. For instance, taking pre natal vitamins three months before conception lowers the rate of Autism by 60%.
When asked what parent/parents can do to help their child, Dr. Melillo believes that training your body one year before conception is important. "Train your body like an Olympian and then have a healthy pregnancy. (Pre conception will be the 'buzz word' in the future.) After your child is born and as your child grows, watch for your babies "milestones", these are very important. When your child rolls over, crawls or scoots, be aware of these motor skills. These are critical and if they are delayed, the parent needs to intervene right away."
