The guest on Parent Choices for Struggling Teens on Christmas Eve was Tim Viands, headmaster at Grand River Academy. Tim discussed with Lon Woodbury the benefits of a single gender model of education versus the options of a 'co-ed' education.

As a firm believer that boys and girls are wired differently, Tim strongly feels that "we are doing a disservice in teaching our kids in a cookie cutter way." Boys tend to learn better visually, they need to use their hands and to be continually engaged in what they are doing, simply stated- boy's need hands on learning! Boys learn completely different than girls and in a gender specific school, they don't have to pretend to be something they are not….they get to try different choices. Finding success in these choices for the boys, then break down the barriers that have been put up as a defense mechanism and they then open up, both emotionally and scholastically.

"Boys tend to be fidgety in the classroom and they need active experiential learning. Activity is important and at a single sex school, sports for boys are more than winning the state championship, its more about team and camaraderie, it's about collaboration with your peers and discovering what you are interested in."

If a parent is noticing some warning signs that their child is in trouble: when they stop communicating with you as a parent or they have become secretive in whom they are hanging out with, it is the time to look for some help. Call IECA and get the professional advice from a third party. There are so many options out there that are available for struggling teens and kids and these professionals can help with those kinds of decisions.
