On December 10, Parent Choices for Struggling Teens featured Gary Hees, the Clinical Director and Administrator at Spring Ridge Academy, a therapeutic boarding school for girls in Arizona. Gary spoke with Lon about some of the new current approaches in therapy for struggling teens.
He shared with Lon some of the signs that struggling teens may exhibit that parents need to watch for, that may indicate the need for placement out of the home, these include: falling grades, a change in sleep patterns, moving from familiar friends to new groups of friends, hearing about issues at school, isolating by being online constantly or the teen becoming excessively combative or irritable about following parental rules. These conflicts, defiance and disrespect are often issues that the family may not be able to resolve.
The use of several therapies and modalities with the girls at Spring Ridge are key, due to the many issues the girls are dealing with. Some of the approaches used include EMDR, Post Induction Therapy, Ericksonian Hypnosis, DBT, CBT and structural family therapy." Families need to be very involved when their child is enrolled, they need to be committed to reunification of the family, participate in family sessions and commit to workshops and trainings."
