The November 12 edition of Parent Choices for Struggling Teens focused on naturopathic medicine and how it differs from traditional medicine with Dr. Jade Wimberley, ND, a consulting Naturopathic Physician who works with struggling teens at Open Sky Wilderness Therapy in Colorado. "Naturopathic physicians believe the body has the ability to heal itself and often times we need to get out of the way to make that happen." Dr. Jade went on to expand on this concept, by saying the main difference with naturopathic medicine is the amount of time these physicians spend with their patients, really getting to know them at the initial visit and going over all aspects of the patients health. Naturopathic medicine is actually going back to the basics of a patient: what are they eating? What are they drinking and how are they sleeping?

"Teenagers today are under a tremendous amount of stress and it can manifest itself by creating health problems. Here at Open Sky, the program for these boys, ages 13 to young adult, is an integrated program that focuses on the body, mind, heart and soul. We focus on teaching the kids healthy lifestyle choices and naturopathic medicine treats the whole child: through good nutrition, good sleep, exercise and developing good relationships. "Our goal is not to take these kids off their medications, but rather to educate them. Often these boys have seen several physicians and have been prescribed numerous medications and they don't know why or even what they are taking. The 'medical piece' is incredibly important here."
