Often dubbed "the anger guy", Evan Katz spoke with Lon October 29, 2012 on Parent Choices for Struggling Teens, on a subject he has become quite good at: working with teens and men with anger issues. Speaking from experience, Evan shared his own personal life growing up with an angry father and how he shielded his own low self-esteem with anger. Even years after his parents divorced, Evan remained angry and then "his mom had to deal with it." This led to Evan to specialize as a counselor in this field.

Teens often use anger as a front, for the real feelings that are underneath: fear and loneliness, often times not feeling of value. As an adolescent, teens base their perceptions on how they feel from their peers, friends or even parents. Their "value" is based on who they are, how they feel and then become dependent on whom and what other's see. The 'black hole' inside of them, which is filled with shame or emptiness and other out of control feelings, controls them to put up a shield, which for many teens is anger.

"Anger is a wonderful way to "protect" how they feel inside, shared Evan. They use this anger as a defense mechanism and often they will take the worst stuff out on the ones they love the most or the ones they feel the safest with, this is usually the parent."

Evan offered some tips and tricks for parents with angry teens, stressing structure for teens that seem oppositional and letting go of power struggles, because "no one ever wins a power struggle with a kid"
