Joining hosts Lon Woodbury and Liz McGhee today on The Woodbury Report were several well-known guests who visited with Lon & Liz and shared some of the latest happenings within the parent choice network. First up was Hilarie Cash, the founder of the first Internet Addiction treatment program for young adults, reSTART near Seattle Washington. Currently in its fifth year, Hilarie talked about how children as young as nine years old are now falling into this addiction. These are children hooked on games, their Ipads and the internet and become quite anxious without their electronics. She also shared there are plans to expand her program and are currently dealing with a rather lengthy waiting list of clients. "This problem is not going away. It is difficult to abstain from technology and having to find a healthy balance can be interesting and a challenge for computer addicts."
Maryann Campbell, the Executive Director of the Glenholme School located in Washington, CT for children with learning difficulties was our next guest. Since the inception of Character Education at the school 20 years ago, Maryann explained how the entire school- including all staff, support staff, teachers and administrators have taken on the role to teach the universal character values of honesty, respect, kindness and responsibility to their students and community. With these consistent role models and the predictability of a positive school setting, students are supported in their academics, social skills and emotional development. "We are all being held accountable for our actions" shared Maryann.
Out last guest was LJ Mitchell, the founder of Greenbrier Academy and now the author of his new book- Decide Now: the Good Life or the Best Life. LJ explained "there are lots of people looking for the 'good life'… things that give us pleasure, things that make us feel good, accomplishments, ego and pride. But the 'best life' is a step up, a life that is based on good, quality relationships, relationships that are cultivated and built on respect, compassion and love." In order to nurture these relationships, our self-concept is critically important and it is based on who you think you are." To hear more on LJ's new book, we have a full length interview from our show The Woodbury Report, on K4HD.com that was aired on October 28, 2014.
