John Hunt, the author of the book,
Walking with Jason, founded the Jason William Hunt Foundation, a scholarship fund that provides therapeutic wilderness expeditions for kids learning to believe in themselves again. John's son, Jason William Hunt was a wilderness educator who died in 2001 from a vacation rock climbing accident. The book follows Jason's attempts to be an effective wilderness educator for kids struggling with behavior issues and poor decision making skills. Throughout the book, John examines the power of the wilderness to effect change and the important qualities it takes for wilderness staff to reach these kids.
- What qualities do field staff need to master in working with kids in the wilderness?
- Why the wilderness?
- How does it effect change in these kids?
- What are "at-risk" kids and how would you describe them?
- In working with groups of boys or girls in the wilderness who have specific needs, what kind of interactions can be expected?
- What can a teen take away from the experience to use in the future for dealing with problems and issues?
Joining host Lon Woodbury on Parent Choices for Struggling Teens, John will share about his reasons for writing
Walking with Jason and in doing so, what the toughest part was for him in writing the book.
