Kristie Campbell, Independent Educational Consultant with Woodbury Reports recently visited Lava Heights Academy in Toquerville, UT, on a tour coordinated by Kay Ford of CKC Tours.
Lava Heights Academy is a Residential Treatment Center for Troubled Teens 12-18 offering Comprehensive Arts Therapy Programs Covering all Four Arts Modalities – Music, Drama, Art and Dance/Movement Therapies. The therapists and arts professionals work with teens who have psychological, emotional, behavioral, social, and other developmental challenges – reaching them in ways traditional talk therapy cannot. The arts provide a way for students to communicate and overcome complex feelings, fears and struggles when words alone are not enough. Students may have a history of emotional problems such as poor self-esteem, poor coping skills, lack of anger management skills, Depression, Anxiety, Poor impulse control, Eating disorders and/or other self harm, History of drug or alcohol abuse, History of poor school performance, History of abuse or neglect, Developing parent-child conflict issues, Obsessive compulsive disorder, Body Image disorders, or other self-destructive behaviors.
