Michael Gurian, Co-Founder of the Gurian Institute and author, spoke to talk show host Lon Woodbury on L.A. Talk Radio about what the Bible and Brain Science reveal about raising boys.
About Michael Gurian
Michael Gurian is an American author and social philosopher who was trained as a family therapist and went on to become a corporate consultant. He has taught at Gonzaga University, Eastern Washington University, and Ankara University. As an author, he has published over twenty-five books, several of which were New York Times bestsellers. As the founder of the Gurian Institute, his work includes training professionals to deal with the developmental aspects of childhood, with his research specializing in focusing on gender differences.
Understanding What the Bible and Brain Science Reveal about Raising Boys
Amongst a variety of topics, Gurian discussed the "boy crisis" with Woodbury: How the educational initiative to give girls more opportunity in life had ignored the needs of boys because the entire curriculum before college was focused on teaching in a way that harmonized with the female brain worked while ignoring the needs of the male brain.
He believes that there is actually a design for how the male brain works, and there are some timeless principles of raising boys mentioned in both the Old and New Testament via the examples of biblical male archetypes ranging from Abraham to Jesus. In collaboration with Gregory Jantz, PhD, he has written about this theme in considerable detail in his latest book, Raising Boys by Design: what the bible and brain science reveal about what your son needs to thrive. Apparently, the neuroscience of how boys learn is very consistent with the principles taught in the stories of the Bible.
During the interview, Gurian offered the listener's of the Struggling Teens radio show a practical blueprint to help any parent build a HERO-raising a boy who values Honor, Enterprise, Responsibility, and Originality. Understanding this paradigm will help boys to succeed in school and hone crucial life skills, develop a healthy perspective on sexuality, avoid the pitfalls of media and technology, and embark on a lifelong adventure of balance, achievement, and social contribution.
Final Thoughts
Parents listening in to the show will learn how to help their son strengthen his character, resilience, and self-discipline. They will also learn how help their son nurture genuine compassion and empathy, as well as how to help their son discover ways to process words and emotions in ways that fit his brain chemistry. In essence, then, they will learn exactly what the Bible and Brain Science reveal about raising boys.
